Who Can See Your Following List If Your Account Is Private?
If your Instagram account is private, only the followers you've approved can open your following list from your profile. Anyone you haven't approved, including people searching from outside the app, cannot see it, and the follower count still shows publicly even when the list itself is blocked. Instagram has no toggle that hides this list from a follower you've already accepted. SnoopInsta, an iOS app, can tell you when a later check finds a new follow on a private account you already follow, starting from the day you add it. It does not show who that account followed before you started watching, and it does not unlock the following list of a private account you don't follow.
These are two different questions people often mix up: who can see a list that already exists, and who gets notified when that list changes. Instagram's privacy settings answer the first question. SnoopInsta is built only for the second.
What does Instagram show for a private account's following list?
Instagram shows the following list on a profile page, but access depends on approval, not on the viewer's own account settings. If the account is private and you haven't been approved, the "Following" number still displays, but tapping it returns nothing or prompts you to send a follow request first.
- Open the profile and tap "Following" to view the list, if you're an approved follower or the account is public.
- If you're not approved yet, send a follow request from the profile page and wait for acceptance.
- Once approved, the list loads in whatever order Instagram currently sorts it in, which is not necessarily the order the account followed each person.
- Blocking a follower removes their access to this list along with the rest of the profile.
Instagram's own help documentation confirms this split between public and private visibility (Instagram Help Center).
What can't you see about someone's following list?
Instagram used to run a separate activity tab that showed a running feed of who an account followed, liked, or commented on in roughly real time. TechCrunch reported the shutdown of that tab in October 2019, and no replacement has shipped since. There's also no setting, paid or free, that reveals the following list of a private account you don't already follow, and no way to pull a timestamp for a past follow unless something was already watching before it happened.
For a longer breakdown of what that old activity tab did and why it's gone, see how to see who someone followed on Instagram history. If you want to know when a specific follow happened rather than just that it happened, read how to see when someone followed someone on Instagram.
Private account vs. public account: who sees the following list?
| Account type | Who can view the following list | Who cannot |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Anyone with the Instagram app or a web browser | No one, unless individually blocked by the owner |
| Private, you're approved | You, the owner, and other approved followers | Anyone not approved |
| Private, you're not approved | Only the owner | You, until approved |
How does SnoopInsta fit into tracking a private account's follows?
SnoopInsta watches an account you've already been approved to follow, or a public account, and checks it for new follows. It does not grant you access to an account that hasn't approved you, and it does not pull a list of everyone that account has ever followed. You can watch more than one profile at a time if you're tracking several accounts.
- Add the username inside the SnoopInsta app.
- SnoopInsta starts watching from that day forward, not before.
- When a later check finds a new follow, you get an email. You can also tap Check Now inside the app to check manually.
The account being watched is not notified about this. Download the app from the App Store or start from the SnoopInsta website.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see a private account's following list without following them?
No. Instagram only shows the following list to the account owner and the followers that owner has approved. There's no setting or workaround inside the app that opens it to anyone else.
Can I hide my following list from people who already follow me?
Instagram doesn't offer a setting for that. If you don't want a specific follower to see your following list, the only option is to remove or block that follower, which also removes their access to the rest of your profile.
Can SnoopInsta show me a complete following list for a private account?
No. SnoopInsta only reports new follows found after you add a profile. It does not pull the account's existing following list, and it does not work on a private account you haven't been approved to follow.
Is there a way to see who an account followed first, before I started tracking?
Not through Instagram or SnoopInsta. Instagram's own activity feed for this was removed in 2019, and no current feature replaces it. See how to see who followed who first on Instagram for what's actually possible now.
