What Is the Difference Between Followers and Following on Instagram?

Followers are the accounts that chose to follow you, so your posts and stories show up in their feed. Following is the list of accounts you chose to follow, so their posts show up in yours. Instagram displays both counts and both lists on a profile, but it only shows the current list, not a log of who was added or removed over time. If you want to know about new follows going forward, not a history, an app like SnoopInsta can watch a public account, or a private one you already follow, and email you when a later check finds a new follow.

What Is the Actual Difference?

Followers and following are two separate lists tied to one profile. Followers is who sees you; following is who you see. A person can have very different numbers for each, and neither list affects the other.

TermWhat it meansWhere it shows up
FollowersAccounts that follow this profileLeft count on the profile, labeled "Followers"
FollowingAccounts this profile followsRight count on the profile, labeled "Following"
MutualAccounts in both listsNot labeled separately by Instagram, has to be checked manually

What Does Instagram Itself Show?

On any profile, tap "Followers" to see who follows that account, or "Following" to see who they follow. Both lists are ordered roughly by recent activity, with a search bar at the top. On a private account, only people who are already approved followers can open these lists; everyone else sees the counts but not the names.

  • Followers count and Following count sit next to each other under the username
  • Tapping either number opens a scrollable list with a search field
  • Private accounts hide both lists from non-followers, showing only the numbers

This gives you a snapshot. It does not tell you when someone joined either list, or who was removed last week.

What Still Does Not Work?

Instagram removed the separate "Following" activity tab, which used to show likes and comments made by accounts a person followed, in 2019 (TechCrunch). That tab is gone and will not come back inside the app, so there is no built-in feed of what the accounts someone follows are doing. There is also no built-in way to see when a specific follow happened, or to pull up a dated history of who someone followed in the past, since Instagram's own interface only shows the current list.

If the real question is about timing, how to see when someone followed someone on Instagram covers that limit in more detail. If it's about who followed first between two accounts, see how to see who followed who first on Instagram. For a look at past follows rather than current ones, how to see who someone followed on Instagram (history) explains why that record doesn't exist either.

Where Does SnoopInsta Fit?

SnoopInsta doesn't recover old history or read anything Instagram hides. It watches a profile going forward and tells you when a new follow shows up. The person being watched is not notified. Setup is three steps:

  1. Add the username, public or a private account you already follow
  2. The app starts watching from that day, it does not pull follows from before you added it
  3. You get an email when a later check finds a new follow, or you can tap Check Now in the iOS app any time

For a free, lighter version of the same idea, the Instagram follower tracker tool on the SnoopInsta site lets you check a public profile's counts without installing anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is My Following Count Higher Than My Followers Count?

This just means you've followed more accounts than have followed you back. It's common on new accounts or accounts that follow a lot of pages and creators. Neither number affects how your posts are shown to the people who do follow you.

Can I See Who Unfollowed Me on Instagram?

Instagram doesn't keep a built-in log of unfollows. You'd notice only by comparing your follower list at two different times, which is manual and easy to miss on a large account.

Does Instagram Tell the Other Person When I Check Their Following List?

No. Viewing someone's public followers or following list is not announced to them in any way inside the app.

Can I Hide My Following List From Everyone?

Setting your account to private hides both lists from anyone who isn't an approved follower. There is no setting that hides the list from your own followers specifically.
