"Follows you" is a small label Instagram shows under someone's username when you open their profile and that person already follows your account back. It means the follow is mutual, nothing about when it started. Instagram does not show a date on this badge, and SnoopInsta does not add one either. SnoopInsta can tell you when an account you're already watching follows someone new, starting from the day you add that username in the iOS app.
Where does the "follows you" label appear on Instagram?
The label shows up directly under a username on that person's profile page, right above or beside the Message and Follow/Following buttons. You'll only see it when you're logged into your own account and that account is one the profile owner already follows. It can also appear next to a short line like "Followed by [name] and 3 others" if you share mutual followers.
- Open the profile in question from search, a comment, or a tagged photo.
- Look just under the username and name fields.
- If the account follows you back, "Follows you" sits there in gray text.
- If it doesn't follow you, the space is blank or shows mutual followers instead.
The badge updates when you refresh the profile, not instantly as you sit on the screen. If someone follows you while you're viewing their page, you typically need to leave and reopen the profile for the label to show.
What can't you find out about a "follows you" badge?
You can't see when the follow happened, whether they followed you first or you followed them first, or whether they've unfollowed and re-followed in the past. Instagram removed the feature that showed this kind of follow history back in 2019, and nothing has replaced it since.
That missing feature was the Following activity tab, which once let you see accounts a person followed and the order they followed them in. TechCrunch reported on its removal in this 2019 story, and it has not returned as of October 2026. If you're trying to figure out who followed whom first between two accounts, our post on how to see who followed who first on Instagram covers what's actually possible now. If you want the follow timeline for a specific account, see how to see when someone followed someone on Instagram.
Instagram's own privacy and account settings are managed through the Instagram Help Center, which confirms there's no built-in setting that shows follow timestamps or follow order to other users.
How does SnoopInsta relate to the "follows you" label?
SnoopInsta doesn't explain or display the "follows you" badge itself, since that's a native Instagram feature tied to your own logged-in account. What it does is watch a public username, or a private account you already follow, and tell you when a later check finds a new follow that wasn't there before. It does not read DMs, comments, or tagged photos, and the person being watched is not notified.
- Add the username you want to watch in the SnoopInsta app.
- SnoopInsta starts tracking from that day forward, not before.
- You get an email when a check finds a new follow on that account.
This is useful if you're less interested in whether one specific account follows you back, and more interested in who else that account starts following over time. For a free way to browse someone's current follower list first, there's also the Instagram follower tracker tool on our site.
Frequently asked questions
Does "follows you" update instantly when someone follows me?
No. The label shows up based on Instagram's current data when you load or refresh a profile, not the second a follow happens. If you just followed someone and want to see the badge appear on their page, closing and reopening their profile usually forces it to refresh.
Can I see exactly when someone started following me?
No, Instagram does not display a follow date anywhere in the app for either side of the relationship. If you want to know when an account you're watching follows a new person going forward, SnoopInsta can flag that from the day you add the username, but it has no access to past follows from before you started.
Why did the "follows you" label disappear from a profile?
Usually because the account unfollowed you. The label is tied to the current state of the relationship, so it comes and goes as people follow and unfollow. There's no record kept of the badge appearing or disappearing.
Is there a notification for new followers?
Instagram sends a standard activity notification when someone follows your account, visible in the Activity tab. It doesn't separately alert you when a specific person's follow status toward you changes to mutual; you'd only notice by viewing their profile.
