Can People See Who I Follow on a Private Instagram Account?

Yes. On a private Instagram account, anyone you've approved as a follower can open your profile, tap "Following," and see the full list of accounts you follow. People who are not approved followers, including anyone searching your username from the outside, see none of it. The account being private blocks the public, not the people you've already let in.

That's a different question from tracking what someone else does after you start watching their account. If what you actually want is a notice when a specific person follows a new account going forward, that's a narrower job, and it's what the SnoopInsta iOS app is built for, on public accounts or private accounts you already follow.

  • Private account following/follower lists are visible only to accounts you've approved, not to the public (Instagram Help Center).
  • There is no native Instagram setting to hide your following list from one approved follower while showing it to others.
  • Instagram removed its separate "Following" activity tab, which once showed likes and comments from accounts you follow, back in 2019 (TechCrunch).

What can approved followers see on a private account?

An approved follower can see everything on a private profile: your posts, your followers list, and your following list. There's no partial view. Once someone is approved, their access to your lists is the same as if the account were public.

To check it yourself in the app:

  1. Open the profile from an account that's already approved as a follower.
  2. Tap the number next to "Following."
  3. Scroll the list that opens. It's the same list the account owner sees, in roughly the same order.

If you remove a follower or they're not yet approved, that same tap on "Following" returns nothing. Instagram shows a message that the account is private instead of the list.

What still doesn't work, even for approved followers?

A few things people look for here don't exist. There's no setting to show your following list to some approved followers but hide it from others; it's all-or-nothing per account. There's also no way to see when someone followed an account from the following list itself; Instagram doesn't display follow timestamps anywhere in the app.

The feature people most often remember and ask about, the old "Following" tab that showed what accounts you follow were liking and commenting on, was removed by Instagram in 2019 and has not come back (TechCrunch, 2019). If a guide tells you to open that tab today, it's outdated.

If your real question is about follow order or timing rather than visibility, those are covered separately: see how to see who someone followed on Instagram history and how to see when someone followed someone on Instagram.

Where does SnoopInsta fit into this?

SnoopInsta doesn't change who can see your own following list; that's controlled entirely by Instagram's privacy setting, not by any third-party app. What it does is watch a username you add and tell you when a later check finds a new follow, on public accounts or on private accounts you already follow. The person being watched is not notified when you add them.

  1. Add the Instagram username you want to watch.
  2. The app starts tracking from that day forward. It doesn't pull follows from before you added the profile.
  3. You get an email when a new follow shows up on a later check.

It won't get you into a private account you don't already follow, and it won't show follows that happened before tracking started. Those limits apply the same way they do to Instagram's own tools.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hide my following list from one specific follower?

No. Instagram doesn't offer a per-follower setting for this. The only way to cut someone off from your following list is to remove them as a follower or block them, which also removes their access to everything else on your profile.

Can someone see my following list if they don't follow me and my account is private?

No. A private account hides the following list, followers list, and posts from anyone who isn't an approved follower. This is the core function of the private setting (Instagram Help Center).

If I switch my account to public, who can see my following list then?

Anyone, logged in or not, can see your following list once your account is public. There's no further restriction once you remove the private setting.

Can an app show my hidden following list to people I haven't approved?

No legitimate app can bypass Instagram's privacy setting. If a tool claims to unlock a private account's lists without your approval, treat that claim as false; it's not something Instagram's platform permits.
