How to See Who Doesn't Follow You Back on Instagram

Instagram does not have a built-in list labeled "people who don't follow you back." You can find this by opening your Following list and checking each account for the "Follows you" tag, which works for small lists but gets slow once you follow a few hundred people. The faster way is to log in to your own Instagram inside the SnoopInsta iPhone app's You tab, which builds a "Not following you back" list, and a "You're not following back" list, starting from your first check. No history is needed for this specific list.

How do you check who doesn't follow you back manually?

Open your own profile, tap Followers, then tap Following to compare the two lists side by side. On each profile in your Following list, Instagram shows a small "Follows you" tag under the username if that person also follows you back; if the tag is missing, they don't. This method works and costs nothing, but you have to tap into every single profile yourself.

The steps, in order:

  • Go to your profile and tap Following
  • Tap into each account one at a time
  • Look for the "Follows you" label under their username
  • If it's not there, that account doesn't follow you back

This is the only method Instagram itself gives you. There's no sort, filter, or export option for it inside the app (Instagram Help Center).

Why does checking a large following list by hand take so long?

Checking manually means opening one profile per name, with no batch view and no way to sort by "doesn't follow back." If you follow 300 or 800 accounts, that's 300 or 800 individual taps, and you have to start over any time you want an updated answer. That's the main reason people search for a faster way.

It's also worth being careful here: some third-party sites ask you to type your Instagram username and password directly into a web form to "scan" your followers. Handing your login to a random website is a real risk, since it gives that site full access to your account. A legitimate check should happen inside Instagram's own login flow, or inside an app's native login screen, not a website form.

Does Instagram's old Following activity tab help with this?

No. The Following activity tab showed what accounts you follow were liking and commenting on, not who followed you back, and Instagram removed it in 2019 (TechCrunch). It never covered follow-back status, so even when it existed, it wasn't the tool for this question. There is no replacement tab for it today.

How does SnoopInsta's You tab show who doesn't follow you back?

SnoopInsta's You tab is a feature inside the iPhone app where you log in to your own Instagram, and it builds a "Not following you back" list and a "You're not following back" list from that first check, with no history required. It also tracks who recently unfollowed you and who recently followed you, but those two lists are counted from your first check onward, since Instagram keeps no unfollow record for SnoopInsta or anyone else to read further back.

How it works, in order:

  1. Download the app and log in to your own Instagram inside it
  2. Run your first check to generate the "Not following you back" and "You're not following back" lists
  3. Check again later to see who's changed, plus any new unfollows or new followers since that first check

Free users see the first few names on each list; the full lists need SnoopInsta Pro. For the unfollow side specifically, see how do you see who unfollowed you on Instagram.

What else should you know about following and followers on Instagram?

If you're also trying to figure out when someone followed a specific account, or who followed who first between two people, those are different questions with different answers. See how to see when someone followed someone on Instagram and how to see who followed who first. If you want your own Following list sorted by date instead of comparing it against Followers, see how to sort your Instagram following list by date.

For tracking what a specific public account, or a private account you already follow, does next, SnoopInsta's main feature sends a notification when a later check finds a new follow. That's a different use case from the You tab covered above, since it's about watching someone else's account rather than your own.

Frequently asked questions

Does Instagram tell someone if you check who doesn't follow them back?

No. Checking your own Followers and Following lists, or using the SnoopInsta You tab on your own account, doesn't notify anyone. This only involves your own account's data, so there's nothing for the other person to be alerted to.

What's the difference between the free and Pro version of the You tab?

Free users can see the first names on the "Not following you back" and "You're not following back" lists. Seeing the complete lists requires SnoopInsta Pro.

Do I need to wait a long time to see who doesn't follow me back?

No. Unlike the unfollow and new-follower lists, which build up starting from your first check, "Not following you back" and "You're not following back" are available right away, since they're based on comparing your current Followers and Following lists, not on tracking changes over time.

Is it safe to use a website that asks for my Instagram password to check my followers?

Be cautious. Typing your username and password into a third-party website form is a common way accounts get compromised. Logging in through an app's native Instagram login screen, like SnoopInsta's You tab inside the iPhone app, keeps your credentials in Instagram's own login flow instead of a web form.
