How to Check New Followers on a Private Instagram Account
Instagram does not show the follower list of a private account to anyone who isn't an approved follower, and there is no setting, workaround, or app, including SnoopInsta, that unlocks it. The one related thing that does work: SnoopInsta can watch a public username, or a private account you already follow, and tell you when that account follows someone new. That's a different question than who follows them, but it's the closest working feature. The iOS app tracks that from the day you add the profile, not before.
What does Instagram itself show about a private account's followers?
If an account is set to private, only the people that account has approved as followers can see its follower list, following list, posts, and story. Everyone else sees a locked profile icon and a follow request button. This is a core part of how Instagram's privacy setting works, and it applies evenly: there's no exception for a public figure, a business, or someone you used to follow.
- Open the profile and tap "Followers." If the account is private and you don't follow it, the list won't load, you'll see a lock icon instead.
- If you do follow a private account, you can see its follower count and scroll the list, but Instagram does not timestamp when each person started following.
- There's no in-app button, in Settings or anywhere else, for seeing who follows a private account you don't already follow.
What still doesn't work for tracking someone's followers?
A few features people remember or hope still exist don't. Instagram removed the "Following" activity tab, the one that showed likes and comments from accounts you followed, back in 2019 (TechCrunch). That tab never showed new followers either, it showed likes and comments, but it's the feature most people are half-remembering when they ask about Instagram "activity" tracking.
Beyond that: there is no notification, email, or third-party tool that reveals a private account's follower list to a non-follower. There's also no way to see a complete history of who followed an account before you started checking, Instagram doesn't expose follow timestamps through its own interface (Instagram Help Center, Account Privacy). If you want a timeline of when a specific follow happened, our post on how to see when someone followed someone on Instagram covers what's realistically checkable.
Where does SnoopInsta fit into this?
SnoopInsta doesn't unlock a private account's follower list. What it does is watch an account's own outgoing follows, meaning who that account follows, not who follows them, and tell you when a new one shows up on a later check.
- Add the username, public or a private account you already follow, to your SnoopInsta list.
- The app starts watching from that day forward. It has no record of follows from before you added the profile.
- When a later check finds a new follow, you get an email.
This matters for a specific use case: you're not trying to see who follows someone, you're trying to see who someone is newly following. If that's the actual question, our guides on seeing who someone followed on Instagram (history) and who followed who first on Instagram go deeper on that side of it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I see new followers on a private account I don't follow?
No. Instagram only shows a private account's follower list to its approved followers. There's no setting or app that changes this, including SnoopInsta.
Does SnoopInsta notify the account being watched?
No. The person being watched is not notified when you add their username to SnoopInsta.
Can SnoopInsta show followers an account had before I started tracking?
No. SnoopInsta tracks new follows made after you add the profile. It doesn't have access to Instagram's original follow history, so anything before that day stays invisible.
What's the difference between "new followers" and "new follows" here?
"New followers" means someone just started following the account, that part stays private on a private account. "New follows" means the account itself just started following someone new, that's the part SnoopInsta can track and report on.
