Instagram suggests people to follow based on signals it already has about you: accounts you follow, people who follow you, contacts synced from your phone, and posts or Reels you've liked or commented on. It is not a sign that someone looked at your profile, and Instagram does not show a reason next to the suggestion. If a specific suggested account makes you suspicious because of who might be connected to it, the only related tool that helps is one that watches new follows going forward, like the SnoopInsta iOS app, and that only works from the day you add the username.
What signals does Instagram use to suggest accounts?
Instagram builds its "Suggested for you" list from connection data (mutual followers, synced contacts) and behavior data (likes, comments, saves, search history), not from a single factor. The app ranks dozens of signals together, so two people can see different suggestions even if they follow the same accounts.
- Mutual connections: accounts followed by people you already follow, or people who follow you back
- Contact and Facebook sync: phone numbers or emails in your contacts that match an Instagram account, if you've allowed contact syncing
- Activity signals: posts you've liked, saved, commented on, or lingered on in Explore
- Account similarity: accounts with overlapping followers or similar content to pages you already follow
None of these signals tell you who specifically triggered a suggestion. Instagram does not publish a per-suggestion explanation, so "why this account, right now" is usually a guess based on the categories above.
How do I see suggested accounts on Instagram?
Instagram shows suggestions in a few predictable places inside the app itself:
- Open the app and check the Discover People row at the top of your home feed
- Scroll into your main feed, where "Suggested for you" cards appear between posts
- Go to your own profile, tap the person-icon with a plus (or the "Discover People" link under your follower count), to see a longer list
- Check the bottom of someone else's profile under "Suggested accounts," which is based on overlap with that specific profile
Tapping the three dots on a suggestion gives you the option to hide it or tell Instagram "not interested," but that only affects future suggestions. It does not explain why the account showed up in the first place.
What won't Instagram tell you about a suggestion?
Instagram will not tell you who specifically caused a suggestion to appear, and it will not show you a list of people who viewed your profile. There is also no way to see a timestamped history of why or when a suggestion was generated. If you're trying to connect a suggestion to a person's activity, that link does not exist inside the app.
This is the same gap that shows up when people look for Instagram's old "Following" activity log, which let you see a chronological list of likes and follows from accounts you followed. Instagram removed that tab in October 2019, and it has not come back (TechCrunch, 2019). If you're trying to piece together why an account appeared or what someone else has been doing on Instagram, our guide on how to see when someone followed someone on Instagram covers what's actually still possible, and this post on follow history explains the same limit in more detail.
Where does SnoopInsta fit in?
SnoopInsta doesn't explain Instagram's suggestion algorithm and doesn't try to. It does one specific thing: it watches a username you choose, public or private-and-already-followed, and tells you when a later check finds a new follow on that account. If a suggested account made you want to keep an eye on who it follows next, this is the part that actually works.
- Add the Instagram username you want to watch inside the app
- SnoopInsta starts tracking from that day forward; it has no record of follows from before you added it
- You get an email when a later check finds a new follow on that account, and you can also tap Check Now any time
It does not read DMs, comments, or story mentions, and it cannot find a private account you don't already know the username for. A purchase on the SnoopInsta website does not unlock the iOS app separately; the app itself is where tracking happens. If you also want to see who follows a specific account right now, the Instagram follower tracker tool is a faster starting point before you set up ongoing tracking.
Frequently asked questions
Does a suggestion mean someone viewed my profile?
No. Instagram does not use profile views as a suggestion signal, and it does not show you a list of profile visitors. Suggestions come from mutual connections, contacts, and activity like likes and comments, not from who looked at your page.
Can I find out who caused a specific suggestion?
No. Instagram does not break down the exact reason behind an individual suggestion, so you can't trace one back to a single person or action. You can only see the general categories (mutual followers, contacts, activity) that the feature draws from.
Why do I keep seeing the same suggested account?
Repeated suggestions usually mean strong overlap on one or more signals, like several mutual followers or frequent interaction with similar content. Tapping the three-dot menu and choosing "Not Interested" tells the algorithm to deprioritize that account going forward.
Can SnoopInsta tell me why Instagram suggested someone?
No. SnoopInsta doesn't have access to Instagram's suggestion logic. It can only tell you when a username you're watching picks up a new follow after the day you start tracking it.
