Instagram Snooper App: What It Can (and Can't) Actually Track
No app, including SnoopInsta, can secretly pull someone's Instagram DMs, comments, story views, or hidden tagged photos. Instagram does not expose that data to outside apps, period. What is realistically trackable is new follows: the SnoopInsta iOS app watches a public username, or a private account you already follow, and emails you when a later check finds a new follow.
- Tracks new follows only, not messages, comments, or story activity
- Starts watching the day you add a profile - nothing from before that
- Works on public accounts and on private accounts you already follow
What can I actually see on someone's Instagram?
You can see whatever Instagram's own app shows: a public profile's current following list, follower count, posts, and public stories. You cannot see a private account's following list unless you already follow that account and they've approved you.
Steps that work inside the regular Instagram app:
- Open the profile you want to check
- If the account is public, tap "Following" to see the current list, in whatever order Instagram happens to display
- If the account is private, you need to follow it and be approved before any list shows up at all
- There's no sort-by-date option, and the app does not show when any of those follows happened
That last point matters. Instagram's own interface was never built to show follow timing, which is the gap most "snooper" searches are really about.
What can't an Instagram snooper app do?
A long list of things get lumped into "snooping," and most of them are off the table for any outside app, not just SnoopInsta:
- Read direct messages
- See comments someone left on posts you can't already view
- See story mentions that weren't shared to your own account
- See hidden tagged photos someone has removed from their profile
- Show who followed a private account, since Instagram doesn't expose that follower-side data to anyone outside the account
- Find a secret account if you don't already know its username
Instagram used to have a built-in "Following" activity tab that showed likes and follows from accounts you follow, but Instagram removed it in October 2019 (TechCrunch). It's not coming back as a toggle you can switch on, and no third-party app restores it either - any claim otherwise is overselling.
What Instagram does let you control is who can see your own following/followers lists, through the account privacy setting described in Instagram's Help Center. That setting is about your account, not about watching someone else's.
Where does SnoopInsta fit in?
SnoopInsta fits the one piece of this that's actually trackable: new follows going forward. It doesn't touch DMs, comments, or hidden tags, and it doesn't reconstruct history from before you started.
- Add the username you want to watch - public, or private if you already follow it
- SnoopInsta starts watching from that day forward, not before
- You get an email when a later check finds a new follow, or you can tap Check Now in the app for an on-demand look
You can track more than one profile this way. A purchase on the SnoopInsta website doesn't unlock the iOS app separately - the app itself is where tracking happens. The person being watched is not notified when you add their username.
FAQ
Can an Instagram snooper app show DMs or comments?
No. Instagram doesn't give outside apps access to direct messages or comment threads on content you can't already see. If you can view a comment inside the regular Instagram app, that's the extent of it.
Can I see someone's full follow history from before I started tracking?
No. SnoopInsta and similar tools only pick up follows that happen after you add the profile. For a look at what's visible about older activity, see this breakdown of follow history limits.
Does it work on private accounts?
Only if you already follow that private account and the request has been approved. Without that, Instagram doesn't show the following list to anyone outside the account, so there's nothing to watch.
Is this the same as the old Following activity tab?
No. That tab showed a feed of likes and follows and was removed by Instagram in 2019. SnoopInsta is a separate iOS app that checks for new follows going forward - it doesn't recreate that old feed. For questions about who followed whom first, this guide covers what's visible today.
