Instagram does not show who someone recently followed. The Following list is not chronological, there is no "last followed" timestamp, and Instagram removed the Following Activity tab in 2019. The practical way to see new follows is to snapshot the list yourself over time, or use a tracker like SnoopInsta that logs new follows and emails you when they happen.
- Public accounts: you can open Following, but the order is shuffled.
- Private accounts: you only see Following if you already follow them.
- SnoopInsta tracks up to 3 accounts and sends at most one email a day when they follow someone new. They are not notified.
Why the Following list is not "recent"
Instagram used to surface recent follows in the activity feed. That is gone. Today a Following list is a current set of accounts, not a timeline. Refreshing the same profile can reorder names, so the first person you see is not the newest follow.
That is why queries like "how to see who someone recently followed on Instagram" and "see who they followed last" keep showing up in search: the app looks like it should answer them, and it does not.
What you can do inside Instagram
- Open the profile and tap Following.
- Note names you do not recognize, or screenshot the list if it is short.
- Check again later and compare. This only works if you already know most of the list.
- For a private account, send a follow request first. Until they accept, their Following list is hidden.
Parents can use Instagram Supervision for a teen account they manage. That does not work for a partner, coworker, or anyone else's account.
What a tracker actually shows
SnoopInsta does not reconstruct years of old follows. It watches the accounts you add, records new follows after you start tracking, and alerts you. That matches the search intent ("recently followed") better than scrolling a shuffled list.

What this will not do
- It will not show follows from years ago as "recent."
- It will not open a private Following list if you do not already follow that person.
- It will not tell you who unfollowed whom. SnoopInsta tracks new follows, not unfollows.
If you only needed the short answer: Instagram will not sort Following by recency. Track the account, then read the new names when they appear.
