You can see a tag two ways: open the post and tap the small tag icon to see who the poster labeled, or go to the tagged person's profile and look at their Tagged tab, if the photo shows up there. Neither method works for a tag someone removed, hid from their profile, or never approved; Instagram keeps that information private, and SnoopInsta does not surface it either. SnoopInsta tracks a different signal entirely: new follows after you add a username, not tags.
- Instagram's Tagged tab only lists photos the account owner has not hidden or removed
- Since 2018, people can require manual approval for tags before they appear on their profile (Instagram Help Center)
- SnoopInsta checks follow activity starting the day you add a profile; it does not read tags, DMs, or comments
What does Instagram actually show for tags?
Instagram shows a tag in two places if the tagged person has left it visible: on the post itself (tap the photo, then tap the tag icon in the corner to see the labeled accounts) and on the tagged person's profile, under the Tagged tab. Both views depend on the tagged person's settings and on the post being public or on an account you follow.
- Open the post and tap it once (or tap the tag icon on photos with people tagged) to see the list of tagged accounts
- Visit the tagged person's profile, tap the tag icon next to the grid, and scroll their Tagged tab
- If the account is private and you do not follow it, you will not see the post or the tag at all
What still doesn't work?
You cannot see a tag the account owner has removed from their profile, hidden using "Edit Tags," or never approved under manual tag review. Instagram does not expose removed or pending tags to other users, and no outside app, including SnoopInsta, can recover that information. The old Following activity tab, which showed likes and follows from accounts you followed, was removed in 2019 and is not coming back, so there is no built-in feed that resurfaces old tag or follow history either (TechCrunch, 2019).
If the question behind "is someone tagged" is really about a hidden or removed tag, our longer guide on how to see photos someone is tagged in, even if hidden covers exactly which workarounds exist and which don't. If you're trying to tell a tag apart from a mention in a caption or story, see how to see mentions on Instagram. And if the real question is about a comment thread rather than a tag, that's covered in how to see someone's comments on Instagram posts.
| Can you see it? | Visible tag on a public post | Removed or hidden tag | Tag on a private account you don't follow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Through Instagram's app | Yes | No | No |
| Through SnoopInsta | No (not tracked) | No | No |
Where does SnoopInsta fit?
SnoopInsta doesn't track tags. It tracks something adjacent: who an account follows, going forward. If what you actually want is to know when someone follows a new account, not whether they're tagged in a photo, that's the one piece of this it can help with.
- Add the username in the SnoopInsta iOS app, public or private if you already follow them
- The app starts watching from that day forward; it does not pull follows from before you added the profile
- You get an email, or you can tap Check Now, when a later check finds a new follow
It won't tell you who's tagged in a photo, who liked it, or what's in the comments. It also doesn't notify the person being watched.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see every photo someone is tagged in?
Only the ones the tagged person has left visible on their Tagged tab. Anything they've removed, hidden, or left pending under manual tag approval won't show, and there's no setting that reveals it to other users.
Does the tagged person get notified if I check their Tagged tab?
No. Viewing someone's Tagged tab is a normal, silent profile action, the same as scrolling their grid. SnoopInsta's follow checks are also silent; the account being watched is never notified.
Can SnoopInsta show me hidden tags?
No. SnoopInsta only tracks new follows on a profile starting the day you add it. It does not read tags, DMs, comments, or story mentions, hidden or otherwise.
What's the difference between a tag and a mention?
A tag labels a specific person inside a photo or video and can appear on their Tagged tab. A mention is an @username typed into a caption, comment, or story, which works differently; see how to see mentions on Instagram for that case.
