What Does "Active Today" Mean on Instagram?

"Active today" on Instagram means the person opened the app sometime in the last 24 hours but is not using it right now. It's a rough time window, not a timestamp, and it only shows up if both you and the other person have Activity Status turned on. SnoopInsta doesn't read this status at all; it's built for a different question (tracking who an account follows next), not for tracking when someone was last online. If you came here because a partner's "active today" label is bothering you, the honest answer is that this label alone doesn't tell you where they were or who they talked to.

  • Active now appears when someone has the app open at that moment.
  • Active X minutes/hours ago appears for the first 24 hours after they close the app.
  • Active today / Active yesterday / Active X days ago replace the exact time once more than a day has passed.

Where does "active today" show up?

You'll see it in two places: the Direct Messages inbox list next to a username, and inside an open chat thread under their name at the top. It only appears for accounts you follow (or that follow you) and have messaged before, and only if Activity Status is enabled on both ends. According to Instagram's Help Center, this setting is on by default but can be switched off in Settings > Privacy > Activity Status.

Steps to check it yourself:

  • Open Direct Messages and look at the inbox list; a status line sits under names when available.
  • Open a specific thread; the status shows under the username at the top of the chat.
  • If nothing shows, either they've turned the setting off, or you have, which hides it both ways.

What "active today" does not tell you

It does not say what they did while active. It won't show new follows, DMs sent, comments left, or who they looked at. Instagram removed the old Following tab that once listed a user's likes and comments on other posts back in 2019 (TechCrunch, Oct 2019), and nothing has replaced it. There's no setting, public or hidden, that turns activity status into an activity log.

It also doesn't tell you about follows. If you're trying to figure out whether someone followed a new account, "active today" won't help; you'd need to check the account's follower/following list directly, or use a tool built for that. For the mechanics of checking who followed whom and when, see how to see when someone followed someone on Instagram and how to see who someone followed on Instagram (history).

And turning your own Activity Status off has a trade-off: you stop seeing everyone else's status too. It's mutual, not one-sided, which is a detail a lot of people miss when they flip the toggle to "disappear."

Where does SnoopInsta fit into this?

SnoopInsta doesn't touch Activity Status, online indicators, or last-seen times. What it does track is new follows on a public account, or a private account you already follow, starting from the day you add it. If someone's "active today" habit has you more curious about who they're following lately than when they were last online, that's the piece SnoopInsta covers:

  1. Add the username you want to watch in the SnoopInsta iOS app.
  2. The app starts watching from that day forward; it has no record of follows made before you added the profile.
  3. When a later check finds a new follow, you get an email. You can also tap Check Now in the app anytime.

It's worth saying plainly: the account you're watching is never notified that you added them. But SnoopInsta also won't show you DMs, comments, hidden tags, or who follows a private account you don't already follow. It's a narrow tool for one narrow question.

Frequently asked questions

Does "active today" mean they're online right now?

No. "Active now" means online right now; "active today" means sometime in the past 24 hours but not currently. The two labels are different and Instagram doesn't show the exact minute for anything older than a day.

Can I see someone's "active today" status without them knowing I checked?

Yes, viewing the status in a DM thread doesn't send a notification. But remember it's mutual: if your own Activity Status is off, Instagram also hides it from you, so you won't see theirs either.

Why don't I see "active today" for someone I follow?

Either they turned off Activity Status in their Privacy settings, you turned off yours, or you've never messaged that account (the status is tied to the DM thread, not just the follow relationship).

Can "active today" show what they were doing in the app?

No. It's a time window, not an activity log. For related questions about mentions, tags, or comments that people search alongside this, see how to see mentions on Instagram and how to see someone's comments on Instagram.
